2nd and 3rd Grade News

December 14, 2009

Hi,

This is a busy week.  Wednesday is the last day to bring toys for the toy drive here at school.  It’s not too late to send a new unwrapped toy.  We are busily preparing for Thursday’s program at 7 p.m.  Make plans to attend this wonderful event.
As you know, Friday, December 18 will be a half day and we will have a party starting at 10:00.  If you would like to provide some snacks that would be appreciated.  I’m also encouraging students to bring a favorite board game.  We will spend this time playing games and enjoying snacks.  We won’t have a gift exchange.
Regarding spelling, your input has been invaluable.  It has become apparent that it would be helpful to put dates on these study papers and I would be glad to do that.  This paper is attached to your student’s post test for the week of December 7 – 11.  These words were review words and your student needs to keep studying them along with new words that will come home tomorrow.  I think the schedule that is working well is Monday – Study missed words from last week’s post tests, Tuesday – Pre-test, 6 step study sheet, rule activity, Wednesday – student chooses study activity, Thursday – Student chooses study activity, Friday – Return study homework and take post test.  Your students are doing a fantastic job of using fun study activities.  Students are doing well at this point, but the rules are about to get harder.  Thank you for your ongoing support in this area.

Spelling Rules for the week of December 14 – 18.

Groups B, C, and D will learn rule 6

·        /a/ can be written ay, ai, ey, ei, eight, ea or a followed by a consonant and silent e.

Group E will learn rule 8

·        /i/ can be spelled ie, igh, y or I followed by two consonants as in wild or as I followed by a consonant and silent e as in kite.

I wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.  Thank you for the privilege of teaching your child.

PS – We need empty shoeboxes for a project after the holidays.  Please send some if you can.
