Reading for Bikes
A Service Club in the local area donated bikes to Green Mountain School to help promote reading.  The program officially began April 19.  All Green Mountain students participating will be able to enter a drawing for one of the bikes.  Each class has set their own standards regarding how much time is spent in reading towards winning the bike.  Our class is very diverse in the kinds and amount of reading each student does.  Most students read at home and all students are given time spent reading here at school.  Some students read several books in a week while others take a week to read one or two stories.  To be fair to everyone in our class, a Reading for Bike coupon is filled out daily when your child reads independently after lunch for about 10 to 12 minutes.  Your child simply circles the days of the week on the coupon that  they read after lunch and puts their name on the coupon.  At the end of the week, all the coupons are collected to be entered into the drawing. The drawing will be held on May 26.  The winner of the bikes will be announced at the Spring Program on May 27.

Science Kit
We planted grass seeds along with alfalfa seeds inside of a plastic cup.  The seeds have begun to sprout.  When the grass is long enough, students will cut their miniature lawn with scissors and continue to let it grow again.   The alfalfa seeds were planted to represent weeds that often are found in grass.  We also started new plants by making cuttings.  When the cuttings grow new roots we will plant the new plant in a special container.  We are also making observations about which seed will sprout first…corn or lima bean.

Our Brassica plants are now flowering.  We are watching for a seed pod to develop and have talked about the importance of bees pollinating the plants.  Since bees are not allowed in our class room, I gently touch each flower to help with pollinating.   Next week we will closely look at parts of a flower by dissecting a flower.  It will be fascinating!

 PTSA Walkathon
Please support your child and the PTSA for the walkathon held Friday, May 14th.  This year all students will be walking as part of their PE curriculum.  The PTSA will use the money raised for playground improvements, and other functions such as Field Day, Field Trips and Assemblies.  Your Walkathon envelope may be turned in at any time.  Thank you!

Invention Convention and Science Fair Information
A change in schedule was necessary to fit all programs and projects in the short time left in this school year.  So the Invention Convention has now been changed to the Invention Convention/Science Fair.  The new show date will be May 27 at 6:00 PM in the cafeteria, just before the Spring Program at 7:00 PM.  If you need more information please contact Mrs. Tolmie.  She can help with ideas or information on how to display projects.  I will be glad to get the information to you also.
