Hi,
This week’s homework all stars are Jenna, Heighlee, Ian, Alden, Maia, Kalli, Gracie, Rachel Shawn and Jase. Way to go!
Many students received awards at our Valentine’s Day ceremony. It is important for students to set and achieve goals. They learn that they are making progress. Students have a new opportunity to earn awards during the second half of this school year. I will be assisting students in goal setting that focuses on math facts, accelerated reader points, and homework completion. In addition students can achieve computer keyboarding goals and reading “minutes” goals.
Students continue to complete one session of X-tra Math fact practice during the school day. In addition, we have individualized flash cards. Students practice exactly the facts that they need to be faster at. One set of flash cards will come home. Students should review their facts 3 times each evening. They will make new flash cards every week. Students are becoming faster and more accurate with addition, subtraction and multiplication facts every day!

Did your child set a daily reading goal and attempt to meet that goal each evening? If not, what are the obstacles?
Ask your child to solve this problem for you: 9 x 3 = ?

Spelling Words Practice Activity Ideas (Student Choice – Thursday)
1. Paint your words. Make them fancy.
2. Glue yarn on pieces of heavy paper to spell each of your words. Close your eyes and have someone give you the cards one at a time. Feel the yarn on each card. Say the word and spell it.
3. Write your study words with chalk on the sidewalk. Make the words big.
4. Trace your words with your finger in sand or on sandpaper. Repeat each word twice. Say the letters softly to yourself as you trace them.
5. Cut letters out of the newspaper or a magazine to spell your study words. Paste them on a piece of paper.
6. Create a graphic design with your words. With a pencil, lightly outline a design or picture. Outline the perimeter of your design with your spelling words or fill in the interior of your design by writing each spelling word several times.
7. Using the beginning letter of each of your study words, write same-letter sentences. “Susan sent seashells to sailors swiftly.”
8. Make a crossword puzzle or word find with your words.
9. Write your words using one color for vowels and another color for consonants.
10. Make up a secret code. Write your spelling words in code. Give your list to another person to decode.
11. Write a story. Try to use each of your words at least once. Check the spelling of each word.
12. Type your words on the computer using different fonts or word art.
13. Write your words ten times in marker or colored pencil. Change colors each time you write it.
14. Write an acrostic poem using the letters in your words.
