Solid and Liquids Combined
Students have been investigating solids combined with liquid. Students put raisins, rice, peppermint candy, gum, salt, noodles, crayons, crackers and paper in individual zip lock bags and then added water. Some solids did not change while others changed significantly. Ask your child what changes they observed. Students are also observing the changes to the solids after the water has evaporated.
What is a Cinquain Poem?
First Graders are learning how to write cinquain poems! A cinquian poem is made up of five lines.
Line 1: one word (subject or noun)
Line 2: two words (adjectives) that describe line 1.
Line 3: three words (action verbs) that relate to line 1 (can be a phrase
Line 4: four words (feelings or a complete sentence) that relates to line 1
Line 5: one word (synonym of line 1 or a word that sums it up).
This is a multiple learning task. Students are learning parts of speech; subject, adjectives, (describing words) verbs, (action words) and getting practice writing a complete sentence. We wrote cinquain poems about pets and illustrated them. Right now the poems are bound together in one collection but soon your child will be able to bring their own poem home.
Fact Families and Related Facts in Math
Your child is becoming an expert in writing fact families. Each fact family has four “members.”
For example, you can write two addition facts such as 10 + 4 = 14 and 4 + 10 = 14. You can also write two subtraction facts 14 – 10 = 4 and 14 – 4 =10. These facts are related. They are a fact family.
In the near future...
